Counselling

Initially, you may feel you only need a few sessions of therapy, (Brief Therapy) but could later feel you need more time, which is often the case for many people. Whatever your need may be and the amount of time you may need support, would be discussed and we would come to an agreement together.

You would be treated with respect and care. It is a fact that effective therapy requires kindness, understanding, confidentiality, and professional boundaries. skills and knowledge, as well as respect for the person’s autonomy and their own abilities. At each session, I will demonstrate empathy and compassion, with the intention of making you feel valued, heard, understood and respected. With patience and a calm manner, I will support you to navigate some of the challenges you may be facing, with the intention of equipping you with the right tools and mind-set you will need to help you move forward, helping to guide you through your struggles, so that you can find your own way to an improved situation. You will not be judged about your past. My hope is to help you, where you are at in the present, anticipating that you will see a path for your future.

Having supported people in the past who have declared having a physical or other difference, has helped me to become more aware of possible barriers in the Counsellor – Client relationship. These barriers could be related to communication, processing information, use of technology, organising, attitudes, physical or pertaining to structural accessibility. With trust between us and your willingness to share any of your challenges, I will do all I can to reduce the risk of any of these barriers having a detrimental effect on our counselling relationship.

My multi-cultural competency, a good level of understanding of culture, race difference and diversity, coupled with the ability to see points of view from different perspectives, guided by empathy, enables me to meet people where they are at. Having developed a good level of awareness relating to diversity, I am willing to support people from a variety of cultures, ethnicities, disabilities, religious backgrounds, sexual orientations, gender differences/identification, offering the same level of care and acceptance that each person deserves.

Having several years of experience in the counselling profession and having taught Counselling Skills up to Diploma Level, I feel assured and competent that I am able to support clients with a range of needs. With an awareness that I have provided support to people in their time of need, particularly, those who have been faced with many traumatic, personal and external situations, gives me the impetus to continue to offer my services to those who may require support from time to time.

Before commencing the counselling process, there will be a contract which will be read and signed by both the client and counsellor. All sessions will remain confidential between us. It will be explained to you from the outset, how confidentiality works, with significant emphasis regarding confidentiality and any issue related to safeguarding being clarified thoroughly. At times, during the counselling process, there may be the occasion where you may feel challenged. This is merely to help with your growth as you begin to see your situation from a different perspective.

To maintain a professional working stance with all clients, setting professional boundaries is vital for us both. However, this does not mean that the level of compassion and empathy I will offer you in your situation, will be diluted in any way.

Should you choose to approach me for counselling support, I trust that our sessions together would prove to make a positive difference to you.

You can commence therapy whenever you wish to and when you feel ready to access support. Having commenced therapy, you are completely entitled to end it whenever you wish and for any reason. However, once you feel you have gained what you need from your therapy sessions and once you feel more focussed to move forward, are really the best reasons to terminate counselling.

I offer a ‘FREE’ 30 minute ‘Consultation Session’, at a mutually agreed time between us. This can take place face-to-face, via Phone, Zoom, Teams or other media.
